How to Analyze a Force Displacement for a Dome Switch

A force-displacement curve is an excellent way to look at the mechanical function of a switch visually. The curve primarily shows two things – the amount of force needed to actuate a switch from its open position to a closed position, and the amount of travel the switch undergoes from the open position to the closed position. Force displacement curves can also show tactile ratio, return force, and other switch characteristics listed in ASTM F2592.

Since tactile domes are momentary switches, the top of the curve shows the force needed for the dome to collapse – causing the center of the dome to make contact with the underlying surface. When the force is released, the dome returns to its resting state. Domes can also be made to be “bi-stable,” meaning they do not return to a resting state.
