Built to Compete
At the University of Wyoming Motorsports, performance is more than just a concept. It gets put to the test on the track.
Wyoming Motorsports is a student-led Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) team that designs, builds, and races formula and baja-style vehicles against top universities nationwide. Since they compete with some of the best-funded engineering programs, there is little room for mistakes. Every component matters, including the tactile switches for steering wheels that drivers depend on during competition.
On race day, even a small button can have a big impact.
The Challenge: Small Component, Big Impact
For years, the team used standard push buttons in their steering wheel design. While they seemed fine in theory, they did not last in real use.

The buttons often failed, and the feedback was inconsistent. At high speeds, drivers felt unsure because they could not always feel the buttons working.
This was more than just an inconvenience–it affected performance.
The team needed a solution that could deliver:
- Reliable actuation under demanding conditions
- Consistent tactile feedback for driver confidence
- A lightweight design that wouldn’t compromise the system
Rethinking the Steering Wheel Interface Using Tactile Switches
Instead of continuing with off-the-shelf push buttons, the team took a more intentional approach to the steering wheel interface—one that prioritized reliability, consistency, and performance under real race conditions.
The final design incorporated 14 Snaptron GX12700 tactile domes, mounted directly to the PCB using adhesive-backed tape. This approach allowed the team to create a low-profile, lightweight switching solution while maintaining precise and consistent tactile feedback across every input.
Snaptron became involved as more than just a supplier. They acted as a hands-on engineering partner.
“With previous switches, there wasn’t much thought put into selection,” Zach Goldner, Club President of Wyoming Motorsports, shared. “With Snaptron, we approached it differently.”
The decision was driven by a combination of factors:
- Proven performance in demanding applications
- Close proximity and existing ties to the university
- A team willing to engage directly in the design process

Engineering Support That Moves the Steering Wheel Needle
Implementing the new solution was not just about changing parts. It meant improving the whole design of the wheel’s interface.
Working closely with Snaptron, the team refined their PCB layout and switch integration strategy. This included designing the PCB to support a 14-dome configuration, ensuring proper spacing, alignment, and consistent actuation across all inputs. The use of adhesive-backed domes simplified assembly while maintaining durability in a high-vibration environment.
Leveraging Snaptron’s engineering support, particularly from Kyle Goodrich, Applications Engineer, played a key role in guiding those decisions.
“Every question was answered with a helpful response, and useful suggestions were implemented,” Zach noted.
The result was not only a better switch, but also a more thoughtful and stronger design.
Early Results and What Comes Next with Tactile Switches
The team is now testing the new setup, and early feedback looks good. More importantly, they have set a new standard for choosing parts and designing their systems.
Snaptron switches are already being considered for additional applications, including their baja vehicle platform.
“Great tactile switches, implemented with the help of a knowledgeable and friendly team of experts” emphasized Zach Goldner.
A Partnership Built for the Long Run
For Wyoming Motorsports, this project is just the beginning.
“We plan to find more applications for Snaptron switches and continue growing this relationship for years to come” said Zach Goldner.
In competitions where performance and reliability are important, having the right partner can mean the difference between simply finishing the race and leading it.
